The Real Sex in the City

The Real Sex in the City

Four best friends living their best lives in the best city in the world.

You probably know what show I mean. If you needed more hints, however, how about great fashion, and even greater sex chronicled in a column and around a brunch table?

Now, I know you've got it.

Candace Bushnell

Another Woman's Sex in Another Woman's City

Sex and the City, the book, appeared in 1996, followed shortly by the famous dum... dum... dum, dum, dum. dum... dum that introduced every episode of the HBO Series of the same name.

I was basically a newlywed at the time, married to my high school sweetheart, so this was. completely different romantic lifestyle for me. I lived vicariously through these glamorous, confident women who seemed completely at ease in a city known for eating most alive. They were aspirational as my friends as I debated which of the four we were - Samantha, Miranda, Charlotte, or of course, Carrie.

Always a Charlotte, Never a Carrie

I was a Charlotte wishing to be a Carrie. I was definitely sentimental, fully believed in true love, loved beautiful clothes, but always landed on the more conservative side. That said, I always envied Carrie's take-no-prisoners fashion sense, nd no question she had the best hair of all of them, even when she cut it during the Berger period.

Fast forward a decade or so, and the all-night reruns were my refuge as I lay trapped between two children who refused to sleep without me and television, usually tuned to Veggie Tales or Jesse on the Disney Channel. So, if my life was far from the world of the SATC crew before, it had taken a massive, and VERY sticky step further away.

When they finally drifted off in the residential hotel we stayed in during my husband's service, I would slide my arm as carefully as possible to wake my daughter for the remote. I would lower the volume and change the channel about three clicks, as I remember, from Disney to E! where SATC played all night. Sometimes I would simply doze off to something meant for adults, or sometimes I would watch until sleep would finally come. Either way, my brain detoxed from hours of children's programming.

The Real Carrie - Candace

The Real Carrie Bradshaw

The genius behind the book and the show is Candace Bushnell. Fans of the show know that she was the real-life inspiration to Carrie Bradshaw, as she was a columnist telling the real deal as a single woman in her 30s. As the show continued, however, the story lines moved beyond her own life. The obvious question is, therefore, what were the true stories?

SPOILER ALERT: Yes, there was a Mr. Big.

For those of us dying to know, you can learn from the source. Candace is bringing her award-winning show, True Tales of Sex, Success, and Sex and the City, back on the road. She will be spilling the tea, along with cosmos, and everything else to give her guest the real REAL. Find out what was Carrie and what was Candace in a fun game of "Real or Not Real?"
